What is Stories and Semiconductors?

Our Storybook and Science Kit is designed for homeschool teachers to use age-level storytelling combined with in-class instruction, tactile examples, and hands-on challenges to engage students in semiconductor core technical concepts. The program is designed for 4th-grade students or students between 8-12 years.

The Storybook

The story focuses on the adventures of five 4th-grade students who discover a time machine (in the form of a book). Finding the book embarks them on a time-traveling adventure that requires them to overcome many challenges and learn about/build different electronic devices to solve a variety of problems encountered due to the meddling of a very elusive and troublesome “cat.”

The Experiments

The lessons will build upon one another in story plot and complexity through hands-on experimentation using provided materials and lesson plans. Students will learn about the properties of materials, then explore how, where, and why semiconductors are used today, ranging from a personal to a global scale. This will be followed by an explanation of electronics and circuits, and a description of careers related to the semiconductor industry. Classes have themed, in-class demonstrations with fully prepared scripts.

What’s Included?

S&S Storybook Chapters 1-3

  • Lesson Plans (Scripts & science activity kits included)

  • Lesson 1: Introduction to fundamental particles like “atoms, electrons, protons, ions, and bonding. These concepts are introduced to help frame the concept of “conductive” versus “insulating” materials. Includes the Pickle Battery Experiment.

  • Lesson 3: Exploration of the fundamentals of electronic circuits. Learn the early basic steps of circuit board design, e.g., how to plan circuit traces, and other physical design choices. Includes the Circuit Board Experiment.

  • Step-by-step educator guide

  • Printable student sheet

How are the Lessons Structured?

Each lesson is broken down into three segments and should have approximately 40-50 minutes allotted.

Teacher-led review of storyline content (5 minutes)

Teacher-led discussion and demonstrations (15 minutes)

Scaffolded, easy to assemble and use, student challenges (30 mins)
